The Jazz Series is especially pleased to present Anat Cohen in association with MU School of Music’s Centennial Celebration, particularly because each time the clarinetist/bandleader graces a Jazz Series stage – and this is her fifth visit – it’s been in a different musical context. Regardless of setting – duo, trio, quartet, quintet, etc., and in this instance a tentet – Ms. Cohen is what you might call in musical terms a pied-piper. While she’s a bandleader of the first order and technically speaking one of the best clarinetists around, her strongest suit just might be the energetic positivity she consistently exudes with each passing note.

A total delight as a musician – who is a complete musician at this point – Cohen will be directing her most recent project, a 10-piece ensemble whose presentation at times borders the seemingly chaotic, but is not. In fact, it’s just the opposite; while Cohen allows her bandmates total freedom to express themselves, make no mistake, she is in charge and has her troupe fully in control.

"Ms. Cohen on the clarinet was a revelation. Using the clarinet's upper register, she could evoke infectious joy. In the lower register, her playing could conjure a deep, soulful melansholy. On up-tempo numbers, her improvisations weren't just bebop fast; they had a clarity and deep intelligence that is really quite rare. She made it look effortless, even as she was playing the most tehnically difficult of all the reed instruments... she took my breath away"

- The New York Times

"With the clarinet she becomes a singer, a dancer, a poet, a mad scientist, laughing--musically--with the sheer delight of reaching that new place, that new feeling, with each chorus."

- Jazz Times

"An enthralling carinetist and a persuasive saxophonist, [Anat Cohen] displays a pan-historical, pan-cultural approach to jazz."

- The New Yorker
