Maria Schneider OrchestraPhoto Credit Briene Lermitte It’s not often we have the opportunity to present the likes of conductor-composer-arranger-bandleader extraordinaire Maria Schneider, a 2021 Pulitzer Prize finalist in music, a SEVEN-time-GRAMMY® winner and a 2019 National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master Fellow. I suppose we could also mention that Data Lords, her 2021 majestic, pastoral and provocative release received the “Album of the Year” nod from several sources, NPR and the Jazz Journalists Association among them. Or, we could just say, Ms. Schneider and her magnificent 18-piece orchestra – which is chock-filled with A-List musicians, many who have made previous Jazz Series appearances in other configurations (saxophonists Steve Wilson and Scott Robinson; trumpeter Mike Rodriguez; pianist Gary Versace; and drummer Johnathan Blake; to name a few) – is celebrating the 30th year of her work, which likely makes her second Jazz Series appearance and first in 16 years, something akin to a should-not-be-missed event. Maria Schneider: Composer/Conductor “Now it's finally here, in the form of a magnificent double album, Data Lords . . . it parses into thematic halves, ‘The Digital World’ and, as an antidote, ‘The Natural World.’ On the whole and in the details, it amounts to the most daring work of Schneider's career, which sets the bar imposingly high. This is music of extravagant mastery, and it comes imbued with a spirit of risk." - Nate Chinen, NPR |
