New York Standards Quartet (NYSQ) concept Is a straightforward one: Take jazz standards and play them inventively in own way. When they formed more than a decade ago, pianist David Berkman said the members realized, “After playing a lot of original music, we thought it would be fun and liberating to play music based on… standard jazz tunes that we had grown up playing,” citing two examples: “Confirmation” and “All the Things You Are,”
“These tunes are blank slates to write on, with a lot of freedom and room for interpretation.” The group has issued half-dozen releases, the most recent being Sleight of Hand. “This record delivers exactly what you’d expect from a band titled ‘The New York Standards Quartet,’ [selections] fully living up to the weighty expectations implicit in the title.” (Jazz Views)
The New York Standards Quartet is comprised of four well-schooled musicians: Saxophonist/Flutist Tim Armacost, pianist Berkman, bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Gene Jackson, each one owning a thriving solo career. This is the group’s second Jazz Series appearance, although individual members have appeared in other musical contexts. Now without a sense of humor, the title of the group’s forthcoming album: Heaven Steps To Seven, an obviously play on Miles Davis’ Seven Steps To Heaven.
