Pianist Billy Childs returns to the Jazz Series after three seasons, again arriving with a classic quartet – however it’s a completely different band. Having gained prominence for his GRAMMY®-winning interpretations of Laura Nyro’s work on his 2014 release, the Los Angeles native has been the recipient of numerous significant awards: a Guggenheim Fellowship, Doris Duke Chamber Music America Composer’s Grant and The American Academy of Arts & Letters, among others.
Now president of the Chamber Music America, the fact is Childs’ beginnings include stints with Freddie Hubbard, J.J. Johnson, Joe Henderson and Wynton Marsalis not to mention his work with Steve Wilson Esperanza Spaulding, Chris Potter, Brian Blade Wayne Shorter and Dianne Reeves.
A tremendously thoughtful and engaging performer and composer, this quartet should be stylish in its approach and steeped in bebop and beyond.

"I make a distinction between active listening and passive listening, and my music is for people who engage in active listening. In other words, you listen, but you interact with the music. It is becoming like a thing of the past almost, a lost art, to be able to listen to music and have it bring images to your mind."

- Billy Childs

"a delicate journey through a thoughtfully assembled landscape inspited by the Cummings poem... Childs [is painted] as an ambitious composer who is adept at combining jazz and classical influences as well as acoustic and electric keyboards."

- LA Times

"Composer/pianist Billy Childs' creative magnitude seems to be that of a brilliant, powerful star suspended in the night sky of that same territory, illuminating the way."
